Technoseum and Christmas Market in Mannheim

On a cold and grey Sunday afternoon we made the 15 minute drive to Mannheim to see the technology museum there. Mannheim is not only the city where the first automobile was driven but also the first bicycle was built there 200 years ago and there was a special exhibit for that 200 year anniversary.
We had just arrived when Mia was spotted by one of her classmates and his sister. Together they checked out an old train carriage that was build in the 1880'ies in Heidelberg and is used for a short train ride in the afternoons

 T
here were also some different bikes to ride on. From historic ones to a tiny circus bile

There were also hand on experiments

After a few hours at the museum we also checked out the Christmas market in Mannheim which has more of a big city feel that the one in Heidelberg

Mia wanted to try a small ferries wheel...

..and also ride an old carousel whit an steam organ

St Martin's Day

On St. Martin's day in Germany children walk with lanterns and hear the story of how St Martin gave half his coat to a poor man. In out neighborhood the walk started at Mia's school and there was no one playing the St Martin on a horse but some children played the story at the end of the walk

Mia had build he Gruffalo lantern in class

The walk ended with hot drinks at the school yard - the one for the adults had red wine in it. Very nice on a cold evening

Children also got a sweet bread with the shape of man

Chestnuts

During an afternoon walk down from the Königsstuhl to the old old town we found quite a few small chestnuts that are good for eating. Ji really likes them and we can roast them at home

A good snack when the weather outside is not so great
