A day in Perugia

Monday we started slow and met our friends and their hotel for a late breakfast
While everybody got ready we waited in the lobby

Dan"s cousin taught an Italian card game

Then we had another lok at the underground city

There were some nice hiding spaces

Assisi

Our friends had rented a big van for nine people and planned to go to Assisi in the afternoon to see some more relatives. Of course we were happy to join on the 20 km trip.
The city is famous for Saint Francis and a large church is build in his honor over a small chapel built by him

The old part of the town is halfway up a big mountain

Some important town people received a special escort on their way to the church mass

The evening ended with a huge family dinner

Visiting the Cacciatos in Perugia, Italy

They almost didn't make it to Italy because their flight was cancelled twice but luckily Sylvia and her family made it across the Atlantic. We had booked a flight from Frankfurt to Perugia to see them on their last leg of their trip across the country to see family and friends.
We had arrived late and woke up on a sunny day to see the historic old city on a hill from the window of our hotel room

Old city streets from the 1500 hundreds can be seen in the inside of an old fortress that was build on top of a part of the city after the armies of the pope had defeated the independent city

 Some of the underground rooms are used for art exhibits

Finally we met our friend at their hotel

 I didn't feel as if we hadn't seen each other for three years

Heatwave

When coming back from Croatia Heidelberg was in a middle of a heat wave. It didn't cool down at night and was well above 30 C during the day. So a little rain shower was a welcome relief - especially with the nice rainbow afterwards
